In his ten years as a varsity water polo coach, he spent five years at Valhalla (1979-1983) and later five years at Fallbrook (1989-1993). In that time, his teams compiled a record of 190-82 (.703), and went on to win three San Diego County Championships. His Valhalla teams won four Grossmont League titles and went on to win the San Diego County Championships in 1979 and 1981. In 1993 his Fallbrook team would also win the San Diego championship. During the 1983-1984 school year, all four teams won CIF championships with a total of 19 different athletes being named 1st or 2nd team All-CIF. Dayle always felt good that the goal of athletics was to help young people become more disciplined, more self-sufficient, and more introspective. Winning was simply an indication of how successful he was at helping make those things happen. Dayle resigned from almost all head coaching in 1987 to concentrate on developing a better Advanced Placement Social Studies program at El Camino.
