Doors open at 7 a.m. for those signing National Letters of Intent

SAN DIEGO—In what has become an annual tradition, the San Diego Hall of Champions will open its doors early on Wednesday, Nov. 12, for  a “Signing Party’ for those student-athletes affixing their signatures to college scholarship offers.

The program itself will begin at 8 a.m. but the doors will be open an hour earlier as more than 300 student-athletes, their parents, coaches and friends share their excitement of announcing which school they will attend on scholarship next fall.

The event is free to the public and runs until 10 a.m.

This is considered the early signing period for boys and girls athletes receiving college scholarships in basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball, golf, gymnastics, lacrosse, swimming, tennis, girls’ water polo, track and cross country, field hockey and wrestling.

The regular Letter of Intent Day is Feb. 4 for all football, soccer and boys water polo. There will be another “Signing Party” at the Hall that day as well.

In all, more than $24 million in scholarships were awarded to those who attended both “Signing Party” events last year, which were covered by most of the local media.

Although they don’t give traditional scholarships, those signing with the services academies and the Ivy League are also encouraged to attend.  For most, this is a culmination of four years of hard work scholastically and athletically.
