San Diego Sports Commission

Robert Griffith and J.R. Tolver, alums of San Diego State and San Diego high schools that went on to play in the NFL, presented certificates to members of the  All-CIF teams and the Coaches of the Year for the fall sports season in 2008.

Nearly 300 athletes, coaches, parents and family friends turned out for the ceremony on Feb. 9 at the Hall of Champions in Balboa Park. Robert Griffith and J.R. Tolver, two San Diego State football alums from San Diego high schools, spoke to the athletes about high school sports and setting goals on and off the field beyond high school.

Griffith, a Mount Miguel High alum, played safety at San Diego State from 1990 to 1992. He played 13 years in the NFL with the Minnesota Vikings, Cleveland Browns and Arizona Cardinals. He was named to the 2000 Pro Bowl.

Tolver, a Mira Mesa High alum, played wide receiver at San Diego State and is is the school’s career record holder in pass receptions. He played four years in the NFL as well as in the Canadian Football League and Arena Football League.
