Inducted in 1955, Milton “Milky” Phelps, a graceful basketball player with all around ability, led San Diego State to a NAIA (small college) championship in 1941-the Aztec’s only national title on the hardwood.
Phelps was twice selected a Little All-American and was the only small college player in the Helms’ Athletic Foundation’s 1941 All-America team.
In four seasons, he scored 1,043 points for the Aztecs, who went 90-28 those years, and led the team in scoring 1937-1938, 1938-1939 and 1939-1940. That earned him election to the NAIA Hall of Fame.
Phelps was killed in an aviation training accident during World War II.
