AIKEN, OGUNDEJI TOP ALL-CIF SELECTIONS

SAN DIEGO (June 14, 2014)—Cathedral Catholic’s Brady Aiken, the No. 1 selection in the Major League Baseball draft, and state shot put champion Dotun Ogundeji of Madison topped the list of athletes earning All-CIF honors in 13 spring sports.

The first and second team selections will receive their Breitbard certificates at the Spring All-CIF Awards night Wednesday, June 18. The event, which is free to the public, starts at 6 p.m. and features 1957 State 880-yard run champion Jim Cerveny as the guest speaker.

Aiken, a left-handed pitcher, compiled a perfect 7-0 record with a 1.06 earned run average. He struck out 111 batters in 59.2 innings before being selected first by the Houston Astros.

Ogundeji led the state the entire season in the shot and in the state championships in Clovis, equaled his personal best mark of 65-feet, 5 ½-inches to win the gold medal. The future UCLA Bruin was also the state leader in the discus (195-6), winning both events in the section championships.

Miguel’s Laulauga Tausaga-Collins (Girls Field), Rancho Bernardo’s Franklin Huang (Golf), Torrey Pines’ Henry Ji (Tennis), Grant Schenk (Boys Swimming), Westview’s Valerie Hull (Girls swimming), La Costa Canyon’s Rebecca Grubb (Girls Lacrosse), La Costa Canyon’s Cameron Ziegler (Boys Lacrosse), West Hills’ Tori Anderson (Gymnastics) and Hoover’s Whitney Gonzalez (Badminton).
