All San Diego Sports Commission/San Diego Hall of Champions internship program participants have the opportunity to contribute to the organization's success while receiving an unmatched, behind-the-scenes learning experience in the sports industry.
The program offers internships in five departments:
- Business Development
- Marketing & Communications
- Youth Sports/Education
- Events
- Sports Development
Schedule/Timing:
- SDSC/SDHOC interns serve a minimum of 15 hours per week and a maximum of 25
- Schedules are flexible; accommodations will be made
- The duration of an internship is 12-16 weeks
- Internships are unpaid
Internship Periods are as follows:
- Fall internships: Sept. 30 – Dec. 1
- Spring Internships: Jan. 15 – May 1
- Summer Internships: May 15 – Aug. 31

BUSINESS
DEVELOPMENT
The SDSC/SDHOC Business Development department is responsible for generating new revenue and maximizing fundraising opportunities for the organization.
Department Roles & Responsibilities
- Board of Trustees membership recruitment and management
- Sponsorship solicitation, activation and fulfillment
- Fundraising efforts through events, programs and new initiatives
- Sport event acquisition
- Build existing and develop new relationships with corporate and community partners
- Participate in various civic, political and community groups and events
Intern Roles & Responsibilities
- Research and identify prospects for potential corporate partnerships, Board of Trustee members and new sports events
- Assist with development and execution of new revenue opportunities
- Represent and promote the SDSC/SDHOC at community events
- Coordinate Board member trips, special events and membership administration
- Youth clinic support
- Other duties as assigned
MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS
The SDSC/SDHOC Communications department is the champion for the organization’s awareness-building campaign.
Department Roles & Responsibilities
- Driving the marketing of the organization in order to build awareness locally and nationally
- The development and implementation of strategic plans for internal and external purposes
- Management of communication-related event marketing component
- A comprehensive public relations campaign
- Internal communications
- Implementation of new media efforts
- Writing/editing all the organization’s outbound materials
- Multimedia, photo, video capturing, production and distribution
Intern Roles & Responsibilities
- Develop marketing collateral such as coupons, flyers
- Graphic Design (Adobe CS4 proficiency)
- Coordinate new media technologies including Facebook and Twitter
- ChampionsSportsInsider.com
- Represent and promote the SDSC/SDHOC at community events
- Assist in day to day operations of sdhoc.com and sdsportscommission.com
- Assist with event and youth sport clinic execution
- Other duties as assigned
YOUTH SPORTS/EDUCATION
The SDHOC Education department organizes and manages Champions Sports Academy (CSA), the organization’s outreach and education program for youth, parents, and coaches.
Department Roles & Responsibilities
- Develop partnerships to advance CSA programs
- Implement camps, clinics, and trainings
- Manage youth sports related event marketing component
- Develop curriculum
- Research grants
Intern Roles & Responsibilities
- Represent and promote the SDHOC at camps, clinics and community events
- Assist in the management of event execution
- Develop content for marketing collateral
- Assist with the coordination of volunteers for youth sports and educational programming
- Research potential CSA grants and community partners
- Other duties as assigned
EVENTS
The SDHOC is a sports museum and venue hall that hosts over 300 events a year. The SDHOC Events Department is the champion for the organization’s internal events, as well as the sales division that books the venue to outside entities.
Department Roles & Responsibilities
- Promoting and marketing the SDHOC as a premier event venue
- Maintaining current client relationships while establishing new ones
- Developing relationships and generating business leads with DMCs, Event Planners, Corporate Leaders, Local Businesses, etc.
- Executing events from conception through final completion
- Providing extensive support to our clients on everything from catering and décor to rentals and entertainment
- Establishing and maintaining Preferred Partner relationships
Intern Roles & Responsibilities
- Assist in day to day operations of the Events Department
- General administrative knowledge
- Assist with client follow-ups
- Assist with event design and set-up
- Assist with business generation and client leads
- Other duties as assigned
SPORTS DEVELOPMENT
The SDSC/SDHOC Sports Development Department works to bring sporting events to San Diego while also building our current sporting events and creating new events to provide a top-level experience for San Diegans.
Department Roles & Responsibilities
- Promote San Diego as the ultimate destination for sporting events
- Create new events and execution of current SDHOC events
- Work closely with event rights holders to meet their needs
- Submit bids and proposals to host sporting events in San Diego
- Continuously strive to enhance the lives of San Diegans through sports
Intern Roles & Responsibilities
- Review and analyze RFPs (request for proposals) from various sporting events
- Assist in the execution of high-quality events, including logistics & operations
- Perform market research of event rights holders
- Positively represent the SDSC/SDHOC at events and functions
- Complete tasks in fast-paced environment while meeting deadlines
- Represent and promote the SDSC/SDHOC at community events
- Assist in day to day operations of the Sport Development Department
- Assist with event and youth sport clinic execution
- Perform other duties as assigned
