Muheize, Goethel and Nonu named first-team All-State

CalHiSports.com, the leading authority on high school sports in California, named El Cajon Valley's Abraham Muheize, Vista's Travis Goethel and Oceanside's Justin Nonu as first-team choices on its All-State teams.
The all-state selections announced Sunday, Jan. 8 completes the all-state teams announced by CalHiSports.com. Prior to naming the all-state team for all schools, the all-state teams for medium schools, small schools and Mr. Football were announced.
Muheize was named first-team All-State as a multi-purpose player. The 5-foot-11, 170-pounder set a state record for total yards with 5,203. He passed for 4,050 yards and rushed for 1,153 out of El Cajon's spread offense. He also intercepted 10 passes to lead the San Diego Section. He is projected as a safety in college.
Muheize was one of seven finalists for Mr. Football, CalHiās state player-of-the-year honor.
Norco running back Toby Gerhart, a Parade All-American who broke the state career rushing record, was selected as Mr. Football.
Muheize was the Breitbard All-CIF team Offensive Player of the Year.
Goethel, a 6-3, 226-pounder, was named a first-team linebacker. He's a physical run-stuffing linebacker who also intercepted five passes, returning two for touchdowns. He was the Breitbard All-CIF Defensive Player of the Year.
Nonu, a 6-2, 240-pounder, led the Pirates to a second straight CIF San Diego Section Division II title. He recorded more than 20 tackles in both championship games. Nonu was a first-team pick on the Breitbard All-CIF team and named the Defensive Player of the Year by the Union-Tribune.

- Second and third teams
Three other San Diegans were named a second- or third-team pick on the All-State team for all divisions.
Rancho Bernardo senior tight end Will Yeatman is a second-team pick.
Mira Mesa senior quarterback Mike Coughlin is a third-team pick.
Eastlake senior defensive back Stephen Carr is a third-team pick.
Carlsbad senior defensive lineman Mendalson Covington is a third-team pick.
Eastlake senior linebacker Marcus Yarborough is a third-team pick.
- Medium Schools
Nine San Diegans were named to the Medium Schools All-State team, with three from CIF San Diego Section Division III champion St. Augustine and two from Division IV champion Valley Center.
St. Augustine High wide receiver/defensive end Menelik Holt (6-4, 215), who is committed to Nebraska as a wide receiver, was named a first-team choice at wide receiver.
Cathedral Catholic offensive and defensive lineman Cody Pope was selected first team on offense.
St. Augustine junior quarterback Chris Forcier was the only quarterback named to the first team.
Cathedral Catholic running back Demetrius Sumler was picked on the the first team.
Brawley senior defensive back Sam Toomer was named to the first team.
Valley Center quarterback Dustin Aschbrenner was named a second-team quarterback. Although Valley Center won the Division IV title, Valley Center's enrollment is classified as a medium school for the state rankings and honors.
St. Augustine senior linebacker Matt Gabbard was named a second-team choice.
Valley Center offensive lineman Dayne Harding was anmed a second-team pick.
Brawley senior linebacker Mike Mohamed was named to the second team.
- Small Schools
Four San Diegans were chosen to the Small Schools All-State team.
Santa Fe Christian senior offensive lineman Paul Tremblay (6-3, 260) was named first-team offense. Santa Fe Christian, a Division V school by enrollment, moved up to Division IV for the San Diego playoffs and finished as the runner-up.
Imperial senior running back/defensive back Christian Ramirez was named first team as an all-purpose player.
Santa Fe Christian junior defensive back Stanley Paul was a second-team pick on defense.
Army-Navy senior Jake Peek was a second-team pick as a wide receiver and defensive back.
- Juniors
Six San Diegans were named to the All-State Junior team.
Mira Mesa wide receiver Markques Simas is a first-team pick.
St. Augustine quarterback Chris Forcier is a first-team pick.
Mira Mesa tight end Nate Chandler is a second-team pick.
Ramona kicker Stanley Shurson is a second-team pick.
Hoover defensive back Todd Doxey is a second-team pick.
- Sophomores
Carlsbad linebacker Wally So'oto is the only San Diegan named among the 30 players chosen for the All-State sophomore team.
