CHASE BUDINGER, boys basketball, La Costa Canyon High
The McDonald’s All-American forward/guard broke the CIF San Diego Section career scoring record with 30 points against Westview on Feb. 10 to push his total to 2,635 before finishing with 2,934. Budinger also became only the second San Diego boy named to the McDonald’s All-American game. He averaged 33.6 points a game and matched his career high with 51 points on Feb. 3 against Rancho Bernardo. Budinger led the Mavericks to the Palomar League title and their first CIF San Diego Section Division I title.
JORDAN FRANEY, girls basketball, Santana High
The UC Santa Barbara-bound senior led the Sultans to the CIF San Diego Section Division III title and set the Santana career scoring record. She was second in San Diego in scoring with 24.5 points a game as a senior and finished her career with 2,190 points. She scored 35 points with 14 rebounds in the Division III championship win over Kearny. The four-year starter led Santana to the regional semifinals before the Sultans lost to eventual state champion La Puente Bishop Amat.
SERVANDO CARRASCO, boys soccer, St. Augustine
The Univesity of San Francisco-bound recruit led the Saints to the CIF San Diego Section Division III title. He finished the year with 12 goals and 16 assists for the 18-3-4 Saints. Note that he had more assists than goals. Like a point guard in basketball, Carrasco is noted for his pin-point passes and for his ability to deliver the ball to teammates while in position to score.
ALI HAWKINS, girls soccer, La Jolla Country Day
The North Carolina-bound recruit has won many awards, but she's proudest of leading the Torreys to the CIF San Diego Section Division IV title as a senior after the title eluded her earlier in her career. Hawkins was a member of the U.S. 17-and-under junior national team and has earned All-American honors from Parade magazine and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
SARAH VAN NORMAN, girls water polo, The Bishop's School
Van Norman, a member of the U.S. Junior National 20-and-under team as a 17-year-old, led the Knights to the CIF San Diego Section Division II title as well as San Diego's No. 1-ranking in the overall poll. A junior two-meter player, she finished the season with a CIF record of 94 ejections drawn and holds the career record with 266 in three years. Her 369 career goals have her within range of breaking the CIF record as a senior.
TODD SCHAVRIEN, wrestling, Poway High
The senior 125-pounder completed an unbeaten season en route to the CIF state title for his weight class. Schavrien's 46-0 record marked the first time in the storied history of Poway's wrestling program that a Titans wrestler went unbeaten. Schavrien's year included winning the Reno Tournament of Champions national title in December, gaining All-American honors, and CIF San Diego Section Division I and Masters titles. He led the Titans to a 25th straight CIF Division I team title and at the state meet a runner-up team finish.
