Even though A.J. Acosta is one of the rare American high school athletes to threaten a time-honored magic barrier in sports -- the four-minute mile -- most meat-and-potato sports fans in San Diego aren't aware of his national profile in running. In the time since this story first appeared on the HOC website on May 30, the 2005 National Footlocker Cross Country champion won the CIF state title in the 1,600, was the CIF state runner-up in the 3,200, won the Nike national high school two-mile in North Carolina and won the USA Track and Field Junior National title in the 1,500 in Indianapolis to earn a berth in the Junior World Championships in August in Beijing. Acosta challenged the four-minute mile on July 1 at Mt. San Antonio College, but his time was 4:03.96.

Greg Oden, a 7-foot, 245-pound center at Lawrence North High in Indianapolis, was among 24 boys and 24 girls named to the McDonald's All-American High School All-Star Basketball Games March 29 at San Diego State's Cox Arena. Oden is considered the top high school player in the nation on a team ranked No. 1 in the country in the Student Sports Fab 50 national rankings. Before the NBA changed its draft eligibility rules, there was speculation Oden could be the first pick of the 2006 draft. Oden has agreed to keep a diary for the Hall of Champions about his senior year leading up to the McDonald’s game. In November, Oden signed a national letter-of-intent to attend Ohio State.

Horizon High, a small private school in Clairemont, returned to the state finals under first-year coach Waheed Mitchell after Zack Jones left the Panthers for a job in the college ranks. After this story was first posted, Horizon defeated San Francisco Sacred Heart Cathedral on March 17 to win the CIF State Division IV title. The Panthers also finished as San Diego's highest ranked team in the state by CalHiSports.com at No. 14 for all divisions and No. 1 in Division IV.

Abi Olajuwon, a 6-foot-3 center from Marlborough High in Los Angeles, is one of 24 girls and 24 boys named to play in the McDonald's All-American High School All-Star Games on March 29 at San Diego State's Cox Arena. Olajuwon averaged 15.9 points and 15.4 rebounds a game as one of the nation's top girls players while leading a team ranked in California's Top 20 to the CIF Southern California Regional Division IV semifinals before being eliminated. Olajuwon has agreed to keep a diary for the Hall of Champions about her senior year leading up to the McDonald’s game. In November, Olajuwon, the daugther of basketball legend Hakeem Olajuwon, signed a national letter-of-intent to attend Oklahoma.

Bill Walton, the best basketball player to come out of San Diego, had big brother Bruce to guide the way in sports. Chase Budinger, the best basketball player since Bill Walton, had big sister Brittanie as well as big brother Duncan. Since this story first appeared on the sdhoc.com website on March 7, 2006, Budinger was named the CIF Player of the Year in basketball and volleyball after leading the Mavericks to Division I titles in both sports. The volleyball honor and titles were his third straight.

Budinger also was named Monday by CalHiSports.com as Mr. Basketball for California. He is the first San Diego Mr. Basketball since Walton in 1970. The McDonald's boys and girls games are March 29 at San Diego State's Cox Arena.
