Mr. Padre bronzed San Diego baseball
San Diego State baseball coach Tony Gwynn, an Aztec Hall of Famer and Breitbard Hall of Famer who was named on Jan. 9 to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, spoke at Sports at Lunch on Jan. 23 at the Hall of Champions in Balboa Park.
Gwynn is in his fifth season as the Aztecs' baseball coach following 20 seasons with the Padres as a member of the 3,000-hit club and a 15-time National League All-Star.
Gwynn was the Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year in 2004 after leading the Aztecs to the MWC regular-season title.
The Aztecs open the 2007 season Feb. 2-4 with a three-game series at Cal Poly and then return home to play 10 of their next 11 games on campus at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
SDSU senior pitcher Bruce Billings, a Morse High alumnus who is the anchor of the staff, returns as a two-time All-MWC pick.
