USD to face Fresno State in NCAA Regional at San Diego State

USD was named the host team for a regional June 1-4 at San Diego State's Tony Gwynn Stadium.

The University of San Diego baseball team, ranked No. 4 in the nation, learned Sunday it was selected as the host team for a four-team NCAA Regional June 1-4 at San Diego State's Tony Gwynn Stadium.

The announcement came a few hours before the Toreros added the West Coast Conference Championship title to the regular-season title they had claimed to earn the right to host Gonzaga in the best-of-three series. USD beat Gonzaga 13-1 Sunday to wrap up the series.

On Monday, USD learned it will face Fresno State at 8 p.m. Friday and Cal State Fullerton and Minnesota will meet at 4 p.m. the other Friday game that opens the four-team, double-elimination tournament. The games are Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday if necessary.

This is the first time an NCAA baseball regional has been awarded to a San Diego school. Thanks to donations from Padres John Moores, Tony Gwynn Stadium is considered one of the finest college facilities in the country. The NCAA fills out the tournament field on Monday, which is when the Toreros will learn the identity of the other three teams in the regional.

USD's 1,200-seat Cunningham Stadium is pictureesque, but it's too small to host a regional. Tony Gwynn Stadium seats 3,000.

The Toreros, because of their high national ranking, were considered a lock for an at-large berth entering the WCC tournament best-of-three series against Gonzaga Cunningham Stadium.
