David Wells
Baseball _ One of two Point Loma High graduates to throw a perfect game for the New York Yankees.
Two men have thrown perfect games in a New York Yankees uniform, and they're both from Point Loma High. The first was Don Larson in the 1956 World Series. The second was David Wells in a regular-season game for the Yankees.
Wells came home to pitch for the Padres after a 2003 season in which he posted a 15-7 record for the Yankees.
Wells became the 99th pitcher in Major-League history to reach 200 career victories. In 2003, he ranked first in the Major-Leagues allowing 0.8 walks per 9.0IP. Since the inception of the designated hitter in 1973, no American League qualifier has had a season in which he averaged less than one walk per nine innings.
