- PROFESSIONALS
CATHRINE KRAAYEVELD (Women’s basketball, San Diego Siege) – Kraayeveld was named the National Women’s Basketball League Rookie of the Year for the Seige. It was the sixth year for the NWBL, but the first season for the Siege in San Diego. Kraayeveld, a former New York Liberty player from Oregon, led the Siege to a share of the regular season NWBL title with a 14-4 record. Kraayeveld, a 6-4 forward, averaged 18.6 points a game with 9.5 rebounds and 2.1 steals. Kraayeveld played the 2006 WNBA season with the New York Liberty.
MORRIS HATALSKY (Golf/Champions Tour, San Diego/San Diego High) – The San Diegan ended a three-year drought on the PGA Champions Tour for senior players as the 54-year-old Hatalsky defeated another San Diegan, Scott Simpson, by one stroke in the Puerta Vallarta Blue Agave Golf Classic. He finished with a 9-under part total of 207 in the 54-hold event to earn the first-place check worth $240,000. On the PGA Tour, the former Leucadia resident was a four-time winner.

JARED DUDLEY (Men’s basketball, Boston College/Horizon High) – Boston College’s move to the powerful Atlantic Coast Conference didn’t prevent Dudley from earning post-season honors as the 6-foot-7, 225-pound junior forward was second-team All-ACC choice. He led ACC in minutes played (38.1) while averaging 16.5 points and 6.6 rebounds a game. He led BC to the ACC Tournament final, finishing runner-up to Duke, and to two wins in the NCAA Tournament before elimination against Villanova.
JESSICA EGGLESTON (Basketball, Cal Poly/El Camino High) – The junior forward became the first Cal Poly women’s basketball player named first-team All-Big West since the Mustangs moved up to Division I and joined the conference. She led Cal Poly with 11.8 points and 6.9 rebounds a game in conference play. The former Breitbard All-CIF choice had a career-high game of 25 points against UC Irvine and career-high game of 13 rebounds against Cal State Fullerton.
BRANDON HEATH (Men’s basketball, SDSU) – The junior guard from Westchester High in Los Angeles earned honorable mention All-America and was named the Mountain West Conference Player of the Year. He was the first Aztecs basketball player to gain All-American recognition since Michael Cage in 1984. He led the MWC in scoring with 18.4 points a game as SDSU won the MWC regular-season title, the conference tournament title and advanced to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2002.
BRANDON JOHNSON (Men’s basketball, USD) – The freshman point guard from Houston, Texas, was named to the Freshman All-American team chosen by Collegeinsider.com and to the West Coast Conference All-Freshman team. For the season, the 6-foot, 195-pound Johnson averaged 9.3 points and 4.1 assists a game.
MELISSA OWENS (Softball, SDSU/Christian High) – The Aztecs’ freshman pitcher enjoyed a quick start to the season when she opened with a 3-0 record and was named Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week following a pair of wins over USD and Loyola Marymount. The right-hander posted a 0.00 ERA, struck out 13 batters and didn’t issue a walk in the two wins.
MORIAH VAN NORMAN (Women’s water polo, USC/University High) – The senior led the Trojans to a No. 1 national ranking and 21-0 record through the end of March. Van Norman, the 2004 National Player of the Year, scored five goals in a San Diego double-header sweep against San Diego State and UCSD. She finished the year named a first-team All-American for the third straight year by the National Water Polo Coaches Association.

JAMES BORGES (Baseball, Fallbrook High) – The senior led the Warriors to a 10-0 start as Fallbrook climbed to a No. 1 ranking for all divisions in the CalHiSports.com state poll for all divisions. Borges moved from second base to third base at the start of the season so All-CIF third baseman Erik Castro could play second because of an injury. Borges, playing third for the first time in his career, responded by hitting .615 (16-of-26) with 5 home runs, 19 RBIs and 14 runs scored. He finished the year as All-CIF first team.
SERVANDO CARRASCO (Boys soccer, St. Augustine High) – The University of San Francisco recruit was named the Breitbard All-CIF Player of the Year after leading the Saints to the CIF San Diego Section Division III title. He finished the year with 12 goals and 16 assists for the 18-3-4 Saints. Like a point guard in basketball, Carrasco is noted for his pin-point passes and for his ability to deliver the ball to teammates while in position to score.
MARQUISE CARTER (Boys basketball, Horizon High) – The 6-foot-3 junior guard led Horizon to the CIF State Division IV title after the Panthers earlier won the CIF San Diego Section Division IV crown. Carter 15.7 points a game in Horizon’s balanced lineup. He was named second-team All-CIF, first-team All-State Division IV and second-team All-State for juniors.
JORDAN FRANEY (Girls basketball, Santana High) – The UC Santa Barbara recruit was named the All-CIF Player of the Year after leading the the Sultans to the CIF San Diego Section Division III title. The 5-foot-11 senior was second in San Diego scoring with 24.5 points a game as a senior. She finished her career with school record of 2,190 points. The four-year starter led Santana to the regional semifinals before the Sultans lost to the eventual state champion.
ALI HAWKINS (Girls soccer, La Jolla Country Day) – The North Carolina recruit was named the All-CIF Player of the Year after leading the Torreys to the CIF San Diego Section Division IV title. Hawkins has won many awards, but the CIF team title had eluded her earlier in her career. She had previusly been a member of the U.S. 17-and-under junior national team and has earned Parade All-American honors.
WHITNEY ORELLANA (Softball, Mission Hills High) – The junior pitcher became the first Hall of Champions Star of the Month from the second-year school in San Marcos. Orellana began the season with a 10-0 record with 63 strikeouts in 66 innings and a 0.76 ERA. She finished the year All-CIF first team.
TODD SCHAVRIEN (Wrestling, Poway High) – The senior 125-pounder completed an unbeaten season en route to the CIF state invididual title. Schavrien’s 46-0 record marked the first time in the storied history of Poway’s wrestling program that a Titans wrestler went undefeated. Schavrien’s year included winning the Reno Tournament of Champions national title in December, gaining All-American recognition, and CIF San Diego Section Division I and Masters titles. He led Poway to its 25th straight CIF Division I team title and a second-place team finish in the state meet.
