Sports at Lunch, John Lynch and the NFL
The Chicago White Sox John Lynch, a Super Bowl champion and nine-time NFL Pro Bowl safety from Torrey Pines High, spoke at Sports at Lunch in his hometown on the eve of NFL training camps opening. As a special feature to the event, Lynch welcomed San Diego State quarterback Kevin O'Connell, a third-round draft pick by the New England Patriots, to the NFL.

Breitbard Stars of the Month, April 2008

The Hall of Champions has been presented Star of the Month plaques since 1946. The professional/Olympian stars represent baseball, field hockey and football. The Amateur stars represent baseball, softball, golf and the paralympics. The high school Stars of the Month represent baseball, softball, track, gymnastics. The Stars of the Month from throughout the 2008 calendar year will be honored at the 63rd annual Salute to the Champions dinner on a date to be announced in late February, 2009.

The professional and amateur Stars of the Month are chosen by the Awards Selection Committee.

PROFESSIONALS/OLYMPIANS
Adrian Gonzalez, Carlos Quentin, Tiffany Snow, J.R. Tolver

ADRIAN GONZALEZ (Baseball, Padres/Eastlake High) – The first baseman led the Padres in hitting for the month with a .283 batting average, six home runs and 21 RBIs. He shared the team lead in doubles with five and also had a triple. He is a five-time Star of the Month.

CARLOS QUENTIN (Baseball, Chicago White Sox/USDHS) – The outfielder in his third big-league season and first with the White Sox hit seven home runs by the end of April to rank among the American League leaders. He finished the month batting .298 with a .433 on-base percentage and .619 slugging percentage. He is a four-time Star of the Month.

TIFFANY SNOW (Field hockey, USA National Team/San Pasqual High) – Snow led the USA National team to Olympic bid as the Americans defeated Belgium 3-1 in the final of the Olympic qualifying tournament in Russia. The U.S. was 6-0 for the tournament and never trailed in a match. Snow scored the game-wining goal against Belgium and was the overall tournament leading scorer with six goals. This is only the second time U.S. women's field hockey has qualifed for the Olympics (the other two berths were as the host nation). She is a five-time Star of the Month.

J.R. TOLVER (Arena Football, Los Angeles Avengers/San Diego State/Mira Mesa High) – In his first AFL season, Tolver set a career high with 11 catches for 120 yards and four touchdowns for the Avengers in an 83-69 win over the Cleveland Gladiators. Tolver played four NFL seasons. He is a two-time Star of the Month.

AMATEURS
Savannah Brown, Aaron Goldberg, Megan McDonald, James Meador, Jeff Skiba, Stephen Strasburg, Jake Yount

SAVANNAH BROWN (Softball, Georgia Tech/Valhalla High) – The senior catcher set an Atlantic Coast Conference career record for RBIs with two against North Carolina State on April 6 to top the mark of 181. She had pushed her career total to 189 by the end of the month and was leading the Yellow Jackets with 38. She is a two-time Star of the Month.

AARON GOLDBERG (Golf, SDSU/La Costa Canyon High) – The senior was named the Mountain West Conference Player of the Year as led the conference with an average score of 70.93 for a round. Goldberg led the Aztecs to an NCAA Tournament berth when he finished second in the MWC Tournament. He was named the MWC Player of the Week for the second time this season and fifth in his career. He was named to the U.S. Palmer Cup team for a June competition of Americans against Europeans. He is a two-time Star of the Month.

MEGAN MCDONALD (Softball, San Diego State) – The senior catcher was named the Mountain West Conference Player of the Week on April 22 after leading the 19th-ranked Aztecs to a 5-0 week with all the wins on the road. She had three home runs and six RBIs in the five games. She batted .474 for the week and lifted her season average to .258. She is a first-time Star of the Month.

JAMES MEADOR (Baseball, USD/Ramona High) – The sophomore right-fielder Meador was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Month after he led the seventh-ranked Toreros during a school-record 16-game winning streak. For the month, he batted .413 (31-for-75) with five home runs and a conference-high 29 RBIs. His April numbers bumped his season average to .370 (60-for-162) with 46 RBIs in 45 games. He is a first-time Star of the Month.

JEFF SKIBA (Track and field, Paralympics/Olympic Training Center) – Skiba became the first amputee to clear 7 feet in the high jump as he cleared 7-0 ½ in the Asuza Pacific Invitational. It is a world record for the men’s F44 classication. He is a below-the-knee amputee. His previous best was 6-10 ¾. He is a two-time Star of the Month.

STEPHEN STRASBURG (Baseball, SDSU/West Hills High) – The sophomore pitcher’s month included ranking among the national leaders in strikeouts as he struck out 23 batters in a 1-0 win over Utah to set a school record. He also bid for a perfect game for six innings before settling four a one-hit 1-0 win over TCU. He was named Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week for the TCU game and earned Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week honors for the fifth time of the season. He is a two-time Star of the Month.

JAKE YOUNT (Golf, University of San Diego) – Yount, a junior from Danville, led the University of San Diego men’s golf team to the West Coast Conference Tournament team title and earned medalist honors. It was USD’s first team title, but this marks the Toreros’ second NCAA Tournament trip in the last three year. Yount won the medalist honors in sudden death on the second playoff hole. He is a first-time Star of the Month.

The high school Stars of the Month are selected and presented jointly by the Hall of Champions and the Union-Tribune.
