Shades Of Greatness Exhibit

Shades of Greatness, an art exhibit inspired by Negro Leagues baseball, visited the San Diego Hall of Champions Sports Museum from July 28 to Sept. 18, 2004. The exhibit originated at the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, Mo., and it became a traveling exhibit in 2004.
The Hall of Champions set up the exhibit for its San Diego visit with the look and feel of a Negro Leagues stadium, complete with a ticket window, players' bench and outfield wall. The players' bench featured replica Negro Leagues jerseys, photos, equipment and capsules on star players from the Negro Leagues.
The Negro Leagues careers of San Diegans John Ritchey, Neale Henderson and Walter McCoy also were recognized while the exhibit was at the Hall of Champions.
The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum drafted a select group of local and national artists and asked them to produce work for the exhibit to depict the history and importance of Negro Leagues baseball in American history. One of the artists with work on display is San Diegan Kadir Nelson.
