Robert Ortiz and Tom Bass spoke to San Diego-area youth football players and coaches on Jan. 14 at the Hall of Champions as the Champions Sports Academy honored the athletes for the past season.

Ortiz, a wide receiver at San Diego State and alumnus of Horizon High, spoke to the athletes about his experiences playing football in San Diego at the youth, high school and college levels.

Bass, a former defensive coordinator with the Chargers and long-time NFL and a college assistant coach, is the Director of Football Operations for the CSA.

The athletes received certificates in recognition of their leadership, effort, character and athletic performance during the past 2005 season. The athletes were instructed by youth coaches who attended Champions Sports Academy coaching clinics last spring at Chargers Park.

The Mira Mesa Chargers, the American Youth Football Junior Pee Wee national champions, also were recognized at the Hall of Champions.
