SAN DIEGO—(Nov. 4, 2015)—Quarterbacks Philip Rivers of the San Diego Chargers and Alex Smith of the Kansas City Chiefs plus San Diego Gulls’ rookie sensation Nick Ritchie were honored as Stars of the Month for October by the San Diego Hall of Champions.
Rivers, despite an ever-changing offensive line in front of him, completed 66.5 percent of his passes, gaining 1,562 yards and 10 TDs while throwing just three interceptions.
Smith, a Helix High grad, helped lift the Chiefs by completing 90 of 144 passes for an even 1,100 yards with three. He did not toss an interception.
Ritchie, who was drafted by the Anaheim Ducks 10th overall in 2014, has recorded seven points in his first seven games, tied for third among the league leaders in goals.
On the amateur front, SDSU running back Donnel Pumphrey was one of six honored for their performances.
Pumphrey rushed for 726 yards, gaining more than 100 yards in each of five games, all Aztec victories. He also scored nine touchdowns.
Former Grossmont High volleyball standout Danielle Dahle, USD’s Lisa Kramer (volleyball) and Michael Turner (soccer), Point Loma Nazarene’s Ariel Oriarte (soccer), and Cal State San Marcos golfer Dylan Healey were also selected.
On the high school front, Savvy Simo of Torrey Pines led the Falcons to the No. 1 volleyball ranking in the state and was selected a Star of the Month along with the Rancho Bernardo duo of tennis player Julia Haynes and cross country runner Nia Akins, football standouts Ezekiel Noa from Helix and Mission Hills’ running back Nehemiah McFarlin and El Capitan golfer Breann Horn.
