SAN DIEGO—(Oct. 3, 2017)—Veteran golfer Phil Mickelson and relative newcomer Xander Schauffele topped the list of 15 pro, amateur and high school athletes honored as Stars of the Month for September by the San Diego Hall of Champions.
Mickelson won his head-to-head match 2 and 1 and did not lose a round in the ‘foursome’ competition as he and Kevin Kisner teamed up to help the United States down the International all-star team 19-11 in the President’s Cup.
Schauffele wrapped up a stunning season by being selected a Star of the Month for the third time in 2017, capturing the Tour Championship competition by a stroke. He shot 12-under for the tournament.
Joining the two golfers on the pro front were the San Diego Padres’ outstanding relief pitcher Brad Hand and ex-Helix High quarterback Alex Smith of the Kansas City Chiefs.
Hand saved seven of eight games while compiling a 2.38 ERA while Smith completed 77.4 percent of his passes (65-of-84) for 774 yards in leading the Chiefs to a 3-0 start.
On the amateur front, SDSU running back Rashaad Penny was selected for being MWC Player of the Week four times; golfer Dan Sivadge won the Golf Channel Am Tour’s National Championship; USD quarterback Anthony Lawrence was chosen after leading the Toreros to a 2-0 conference mark; UCSD’s Amanda Colla was chosen in volleyball and Point Loma Nazarene University soccer standout Eduardo Gallardo led the way to a 6-2-1 start for the Sea Lions.
High school standouts included football standouts Jack Tuttle of Mission Hills, Mozes Mooney of Bishop’s and Brenton Bell of Kearny as well as Mater Dei Catholic golfer Brianna Navarrosa, La Costa Canyon cross country champion Kristin Fahy and Serra field hockey sensation KP Peterson.
