San Diego Sports Commission

With only the rare upset—like last week’s Steele Canyon win over Helix—there has been little movement among the Sportswriters/Sportscasters and Union-Tribune Top 10 polls the last few weeks.

That could change a lot over the next three weeks, starting this weekend where there are three big showdowns as the league races heat up.

No. 2 La Costa Canyon (7-0) hosts Top 10 Escondido (6-0-1) in a 7 p.m. Avocado League showdown that not only has huge implications for the league title but the No. 1 seed in the Division I playoffs. Remember these were the two teams in last year’s Division I title game won by La Costa Canyon, 45-28.

Then there is the first of three straight Valley League biggies as unbeaten Ramona (7-0) travels to equally perfect Valley Center (7-0) for a 7 p.m. game. No. 1 Oceanside, which is ranked No. 4 in the state and plays Orange Glen, meets Valley Center and Ramona during the last two weeks of the regular season.

A game with major State Bowl Playoff implications is the Saturday afternoon clash at Santa Fe Christian where the Eagles (7-0), ranked No. 3 in the Southern California Small School Division, host No. 1 Francis Parker (6-1).

Although neither are ranked among the section’s Top 10 teams, there may not be any better football teams in the state for the schools their size. Although both are Coastal League members, they will not meet in the section playoffs as SFC has opted to play up to Division IV.

Here are this week’s rankings and don’t forget to check out www.nctvarsity.com and www.utprepsports.com for the latest scores.
