San Diego Sports Commission

By Steve Brand

All season Cathedral Catholic football coach Sean Doyle has sworn that the school’s winning streak, which reached 26 going into last Friday’s game against Lincoln, meant nothing. This season is all that mattered.

Well, the second-longest active winning streak in the state was shockingly ended when Lincoln rallied with 19 fourth quarter points to stun the Dons, 22-21, and set off considerable movement in the polls.

It didn’t bother No. 1 Oceanside or No. 2 La Costa Canyon, both of whom remained unbeaten and untied at 6-0, but with the Dons’ loss, Eastlake and Escondido stake their claims to No. 3.

In the Sportswriters/Sportscasters Top 10, Eastlake jumped two spots into the No. 3 position. Although the Titans are listed at 4-0-2, with the ties coming to Lincoln and Moorpark, only the San Diego Section is counting the game against Moorpark as a tie. Elsewhere it is a loss because the two played overtime where Moorpark outscored Eastlake.

So, in the CalHiSports.com state rankings, still unbeaten Moorpark is listed at 6-0.

Another big gainer in the Sportswriters/Sportscasters poll was Valley Center which jumped from No. 6 to No. 4 but still has games remaining with No. 1 Oceanside and No. 7 Ramona.

Escondido, despite its tie with Torrey Pines, held on to the No. 3 spot in the Union-Tribune poll, one spot ahead of Cathedral. With Scripps Ranch losing to St. Augustine, Lincoln – losers only to No. 7 Mission Bay and having a tie with Eastlake – makes its first appearance in the rankings at No. 10.

Here are this week’s Top 10s. Be sure to check for scores and game stories Friday night at www.utprepsports.com and www.nctvarsity.com.
