Golfer Danielle Frasier of La Costa Canyon High and Francis Parker football-basketball standout Deon Randall were major award winners Monday at the High School Sports Association’s 22nd Annual spring breakfast.
A record number of attendees saw Frasier, a senior, receive the San Diego Hall of Champions Maureen Connelly Award for the outstanding female scholar-athlete while Randall was presented the Hall’s Russ Saunders Award signifying the top male scholar-athlete football player.
Additionally, Lincoln High’s Jason Bryant and Ramona’s Connie Halfaker were cited for their success by being selected the Coaches of the Year by the Hall of Champions.
Frasier, who will attend Stanford University in the fall, carries a 4.21 cumulative grade point average. In 2006 she was diagnosed with a heart condition that she thought was just a result of nerves and came all the way back to become one of the section’s top golfers.
Frasier earned Rolex Junior All-American and Academic All-American honors and has become a spokesman in favor of legislation to increase education and research for women’s heart health.
Randall was a two-sport standout this year, leading the Lancers to the State Small School Bowl Championship game in Carson in football as a quarterback and defensive back. He was an All-State selection.
All along, he has maintained a glittering 3.71 GPA and will continue his education at Yale in the fall.
Bryant guided Lincoln High to the San Diego Section’s first Division II basketball title in just his third year as the head coach. Taking over the program after the school reopened following a four-year rebuilding program, Bryant directed the Hornets to 21 straight wins to conclude the season.
Halfaker’s Ramona girls’ volleyball team had come close to section titles before but this was the year they finally were able to celebrate as they downed favored Scripps Ranch to deliver the veteran coach her first title.
