The San Diego Hall of Champions is proud to launch the inauguarl season of the Jr. RBI program in partnership with the Jackie Robinson YMCA and KPMG.
The Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) concept began in Los Angeles in 1989 as a single league with 180 participants. In the last 20 years, it has grown into a nationwide program supported by all 30 Major League Baseball teams. The program is designed to increase participation and interest in baseball and softball, encourage academic participation and achievement, promote greater inclusion of minorities into the mainstream of the game, and teach the value of teamwork.
180 RBI Participants have been drafted by Major League Clubs in the program’s 20 year history, most notably, CC Sabathia, Coco Crisp, James Loney, Carl Crawford and Justin Upton.
All San Diego JR. RBI participants will practice twice a week and receive coaching from local high school and youth coaches during the eight (8) week league. Unlike other Jackie Robinson YMCA baseball programming, RBI participants will engage in live hitting and compete in real game situations. Teams will be outfitted in uniforms and receive all necessary equipment, such as bats, fielding gloves, and batting gloves. Participants will also have the opportunity to interact with local KPMG employees who will serve as mentors and volunteers for the program. The program will culminate in an awards banquet at the Hall of Champions on September 12, 2009.
