Just one vote separated Oceanside High’s Pirates from being a unanimous No. 1 selection in the Sportswriters/Sportscasters and San Diego Union-Tribune high school football polls this week.

Opening the season at the No. 1 position, Oceanside traveled to Sparks, Nev. where John Carroll’s club took down well-respected Reed High, 31-13, for their 25th straight game without a loss. Only a 33-33 tie with Ramona last year has blemished Oceanside’s record since a season-opening loss to Helix in 2007.

La Costa Canyon, the defending Division I champions, got one first place vote in the Sportswriters/Sportscasters poll to prevent the sweep. The Mavericks opened their season with a 54-20 victory over visiting Salinas.

Both Oceanside and LCC have rivalry games this week as the Pirates are home to El Camino and the Mavericks host Carlsbad.
