Sometimes, after a huge and very physical win, there is a letdown.
Oceanside coach John Carroll has been around for a few years and he knows all of the emotional roller-coaster rides teams can take. After the impressive victory over Long Beach Poly two weeks ago, the Pirates bolted out to a to a 42-0 halftime lead and gave most of the starters lots of rest in the second half while rolling past San Marcos, 56-14.
This week the Pirates jumped a spot in CalHiSports.com’s state rankings to No. 4 and will have an extra week to enjoy it as they have a bye before heading into league play against Westview.
Despite its tougher schedule and impressive performances, Oceanside has not convinced everyone as two of the Sportswriters/Sportscasters balloteers continue to believe La Costa Canyon deserves the No. 1 spot. LCC can’t even say it has a tougher schedule the rest of the way because although the Mavericks face No. 4 Escondido in a couple of weeks, Oceanside still has games with unbeaten Valley Center and Ramona. LCC is No. 21 in the state.
Here are this week’s Top 10s. Be sure to check for scores and game stories Friday night at www.utprepsports.com and www.nctvarsity.com.
