University of San Diego football coach Ron Caragher will be joined by his mentor, retired UCLA coach Terry Donahue, when they speak at Sports at Lunch Monday, Aug. 10 at the Hall of Champions in Balboa Park.
Donahue, who was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2000, recruited Caragher to UCLA as a quarterback and Caragher later served Donahue as an assistant coach. Caragher’s career included working as an assistant coach at Kentucky before he landed his first position as a head coach at USD. His record is 18-4 with the Toreros.
Caragher will speak about the upcoming 2009 USD season and Donahue’s influence on his career. Donahue will speak on Caragher and college football in general.
Donahue’s UCLA teams won or shared five Pac-10 titles, three Rose Bowls and he was the first coach to win seven straight bowl games. His record at UCLA was 151-74-8 in 20 seasons from 1976 to 1995. Donahue later served as a general manager of the San Francisco 49ers and television analyst . He worked college football games for CBS and NFL games for Fox.
In additon to USD’s 18-4 record the last two years, Caragher’s Toreros have sent three players to the NFL in the past two years. Quarterback Josh Johnson was a fifth-round draft pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2008, outside linebacker Eric Bakhtiari signed with the Chargers as a free agent and was on their practice squad in 2008 and wide receiver John Matthews was signed as a free agent by the Indianapolis Colts in 2009.
