Rolf Benirschke

Inducted in 1999. Rolf Benirschke must be one of the Chargers most legendary players, having come back from a serious intestinal illness when his weight dropped to 121 pounds and he could barely walk, even though helped by tackle Louis Kelcher.

That was November 18th, 1979. He had come to Qualcomm Stadium to say goodbye, thinking his football career was over. However, a year later he had recovered so much he played for the Chargers and achieved a club record of 24 field goals in 35 attempts.

And in January 1982 he did kick the in-overtime field goal that beat the Miami Dolphins 41 to 38 in that historic playoff game on the loser’s field.

He was the third most accurate kicker in NFL history with a .702 percentage (146 of 208).
