SPIRIT OF ’45 DAY

“SPIRIT OF ’45 DAY” National Day of Remembrance WWII Veterans
VICTORY EVENT AT THE VETERANS MUSEUM IN BALBOA PARK

In the early Summer of 2010 the US Senate and Congress also unanimously approved “Spirit of ’45 Day” a new National Day of Remembrance to recall the victory celebrations at the end of WWII.  “Spirit of ’45 Day” coincides with the anniversary of Victory over Japan or VJ Day, however, this year and in future years this celebration will occur on the second Sunday every August, this year August 10th, 2014.  A Victory celebration will be held at the Veterans Museum and Memorial Center in Balboa Park with activities from 11 AM until 2 PM that include: your opportunity to meet and interact with WWII Veterans, WWII-era music, children’s activity, military rein-actors, swing dancers and concessions.  Speakers include and an appearance and City Proclamation from former Mayor, SD Chamber of Commerce President – Jerry Sanders, SDPD Chief Shelley Zimmerman, District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis,  Congress Representatives,  former CA Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher who wrote the CA Spirit of ’45 Day Bill in 2010, and many WWII Veterans including Pearl Harbor Survivors.

The public is welcome to attend and celebrate the victory brought about by sacrifices made by the Veterans of World War II and their families. “Spirit of ’45 Day” recognizes the anniversary of a day in our calendars that has been overlooked for decades,” says Daniel DeMarco, event chair. Hundreds of cities are set to take part in launching the Spirit of ’45 Project, a result of a 2010, national initiative to commemorate the anniversary of the end of WWII, a time when all Americans were proud that WWII ended, USA was victorious, and that our Nation set-out to repair lives at home and abroad.

& San Diego’s beloved, Jerry Coleman

September 14, 1924 – January 4, 2014

The only Major League Baseball player to serve in combat during WWII and the Korean War (he flew 120 missions as a Marine pilot earning 2 Distinguished Flying Crosses), who played in 7 World Series with fellow WWII vet Yogi Berra (he was the 1950 MVP), Jerry led the Spirit of ’45 Day campaign from San Diego, where he was an announcer for the Padres and a beloved figure for more than 35 years. Thanks to Jerry, virtually all MLB clubs now have annual Spirit of ’45 Day observances in August.
