PREP ATHLETES AWARDS GALA RECAP

In this age of specialization, multi-sport athletes are rare.

That’s just one of the things that make Kearny’s Takoda Browne and Rancho Bernardo’s Nia Akins special. Their high school athletic seasons just ran one after the other with little opportunity to catch their breath.

They were so outstanding they were selected the 2015-16 Athletes of the Year by the combined votes of the San Diego Hall of Champions, San Diego Union-Tribune and a poll voted on by the public.

SAN DIEGO—(June 2, 2016)—Pitching was dominant as 15 standouts were honored as Stars of the Month for May by the San Diego Hall of Champions.

San Diego Padres ace Drew Pomeranz, former San Diego State standout Stephen Strasburg and ex-Rancho Bernardo lefty Cole Hamels were in the spotlight for their dominant performances.

Pomeranz posted a 2.25 ERA, allowing just 18 hits and 9 runs. Opposing batters had little luck, batting just .145 against him as he fanned 38 while walking 17.

Tickets for Kids is a program run in partnership with local sports organizations and universities whereby youth have the opportunity to attend local sporting events for no cost. PITCHERS DOMINATE MAY STARS OF THE MONTH

SAN DIEGO—(June 2, 2016)—Pitching was dominant as 15 standouts were honored as Stars of the Month for May by the San Diego Hall of Champions.

April 2016

SAN DIEGO—(May 2, 2016)—Charley Hoffman birdied the final hole to capture the Valero Texas Open in San Antonio and tops the list of local professional, amateur and high school athletes honored as Stars of the Month for April by the San Diego Hall of Champions.

Hoffman finished with a 3-under 69 and his birdie on 18 allowed the Poway High alumnus to win the tournament by a single stroke with a 12-under par 276. It was his fourth career PGA title.

March 2016

SAN DIEGO—(April 4, 2016)—Ice hockey, basketball, swimming and even fencing standouts were among 14 professional, amateur and high school athletes honored as Stars of the Month for March by the San Diego Hall of Champions.

Norman Powell, who led Lincoln High to the state basketball championship in 2010  and went on to have a quality career at UCLA, adjusted steadily with the Toronto Raptors, averaging 9.3 points and 3.4 rebounds over a 10-game span including a high of 18 points against Oklahoma City.

Roberts, Vaden, Williams Top 70th Salute

SAN DIEGO—(Mar. 2, 2016)—World Series Champion Dave Roberts, World Champion boxer Paul Vaden and All-Pro football standout Ricky Williams were inducted into the Breitbard Hall of Fame at the 70th Salute to the Champions at the Town & Country Resort and Convention Center on Feb. 16.
