UPTON, JOHNSON, GONZALEZ MAY STARS

SAN DIEGO—(June 2, 2015)—Baseball dominated the Stars of the Month selections for May as two professional and three amateurs were cited by the San Diego Hall of Champions.

Justin Upton of the San Diego Padres and former Eastlake High standout Adrian Gonzalez topped the list of three pros with El Cajon’s Jimmie Johnson crashing that group after an impressive win at Dover.

Upton batted .343 for the month with a whopping .545 slugging average that included six home runs and 23 RBI.  Gonzalez helped put the Dodgers atop the National League West standings by topping .300 for the season, collecting 26 hits and 16 RBI.

Johnson all but owns Dover International Raceway as he has won on that Delaware track a record 10 times, including jumping into the lead with 23 laps remaining for the victory on the final day of the month.

The amateur diamond standouts included San Diego State’s Seby Zavala, USD’s David Hill and Cal State San Marcos’ Emilio Esquibel.  Joining those three were track athletes Kate Bouvatte of San Marcos and Matt Bowen of UCSD.

High school competitors recognized were multiple section track champions Deajanae Harvey of Granite Hills, Jordan Miller of Oceanside and Dani Johnson of Cathedral Catholic; state swim champion Bobby Guerra of Fallbrook; section optional gymnastics titlist Carter Clatterbuck of Mt. Carmel and Torrey Pines tennis standout Charles Pei.
