SAN DIEGO—(DEC. 2, 2016)—Jimmie Johnson moved into elite company, Casey Hayward kept making huge plays, Ron Capps finally achieved a lifelong goal and Pat Perez won a golf title after having surgery just nine months ago. The four were among 16 athletes selected Stars of the Month for November by the San Diego Hall of Champions.

Johnson, the El Cajon native, moved into a tie with legendary drivers Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt when he captured his seventh Sprint Cup Trophy to top the professional honorees.

All Hayward did was just keep playing at a high level that has seen the cornerback move into a tie for the NFL lead in interceptions with six and add 48 tackles.

Capps, who has been trying to win an NHRA Funny Car title for almost 25 years, finally accomplished his quest by winning the next-to-last event—his 50th victory overall—and getting out of the preliminary rounds the next week.

Perez was as good as ever in the OHL Classic at Playa de Carmen in Mexico, firing a 9-under 62 on the next to last day before finishing with a 21-under 263 to win by two strokes.

On the amateur front, SDSU football star Rashaad Penny and basketball standout Jeremy Hemsley, USD women’s basketball star Maya Hood and Torero football defensive end Jonathan Petersen, Point Loma Nazarene volleyball record-setter  Christin Fisher and UCSD soccer standout Kuba Waligorski were honored.

High school stars like San Dieguito’s Jennifer Kerr (tennis), Mt. Carmel’s Sam Boone (boys cross country), Francis Parker’s Brooke Trossen (girls cross country), Madison’s  Sampson Niu (football), Serra’s Meghan Schneider (field hockey) and Mater Dei Catholic’s Brianna Navarrosa (golf) were also spotlighted.
