Inducted in 1995. Charlie Powell earned three varsity letters each in football, basketball, baseball, and track & field at San Diego High School.
He started at defensive end for the San Francisco 49ers at age twenty, and became the fourth-ranked heavyweight boxer in the world; knocking out number two, Nino Valdes of Cuba on national television.
In his first NFL game, he tackled quarterback Bobby Layne of the champion Detroit Lions for 67 yards in losses.
Charlie, whose brother Art is also a Breitbard Hall of Famer, was the first San Diego prep football star selected Southern California Player of the Year.
He played for the 49ers in 1952-1953 and 1955-1957, and for the Oakland Riders in 1960-1961.
